Do you lose the ability to trace ownership history with ERC1155?

Hello. I am new to NFTs and the concept of token standards. I read on Opensea’s NFT bible that the trade off with the ERC 1155 standard is that we lose the ability to trace ownership history of a single token. Is this true? what does this mean exactly? thank you

Hi @yrraadi,

Welcome to the community

For tokens with a quantity greater than one, then they are fungible, so you can’t tell which specific token was used.

Currently there is less ecosystem support for ERC1155 compared with ERC721. It really depends on your use case if this is an issue.

Thanks for the reply.
But even if they are fungible, why can’t we track each token in that set of identical tokens, thus mapping its entire history?
thanks.

Hi @yrraadi,

You can’t tell one token from another, so you can’t identify which one is involved.
