Hi, I have what I hope is a likely just a stupid question but for the life of me I can't find a straight answer on this.
So, I see "provenance" mentioned and set it various other ERC721 contracts but I never see how it's used in a meaningful way. What is provenance in this context and how is it supposed to be used?

The ERC721 standard doesn't reference any "provenance" ... and I have personally never seen that.
I'm not sure where you encountered the term, but I can tell you it is not standard.
